Young football player becomes €1.000.000 richer thanks to his Christmas present

People tend to add a lottery ticket to their Christmas gifts as a symbol of fortune and hope, and in Kevin O’Connor’s case it turned out to be more than a symbol. This lucky football player won a €1.000.000 windfall thanks to his uncle’s Christmas present.

The young sport star received the winning ticket as a gift from his uncle and godfather Peadar Murphy, who bought it at Flanagan’s Centra Supermarket in Castlebridge, County Wexford. The purchase was made on December 14th 2017, but the winning Ireland’s Millionaire Raffle draw took place on New Year’s Eve. O’Connor was focusing on the match that he had the next day, so he didn’t check his numbers right away.

“We had a game with Middlesbrough on Monday night so I completely put it to the back of my head until after the final whistle. After some searching, I sent them a picture of the ticket but I never really believed that it was the winner of the €1.000.000 prize,” recalled the fortunate 22-year-old.

A few months ago, O’Connor signed a three-year deal for English Championship club Preston North End. Despite becoming a millionaire, the young footballer wants to focus on his career and bringing success to his team in the years to come. Since he had to go back to Dublin to collect his windfall, O’Connor was able to see his family again and said he’ll keep them in mind when making plans for the future.

“The important part of today was having my family with me so they will be at the forefront of any plans. My main focus at the moment is to help Preston climb the Championship and hopefully challenge for a Premier League spot over the next couple of months,” concluded the €1.000.000 winner.
