Lottery officials constantly urge the players to check their tickets on regular basis, but one woman from Kilkenny probably didn’t get the memo. She had a bunch of old tickets in her handbag that were about to expire, and one of them ended up being worth €35.000.
The lucky winner was one of two players who correctly guessed the five main balls and the bonus number in the Irish Lotto draw on February 10th. Her ticket was set to expire on May 11th, but she luckily checked it three days before it became worthless. It was stashed at the bottom of her handbag with a bunch of old tickets that she wanted to throw away.
“I had a load of tickets in my handbag that I figured were old and I was going to bunch them up and bin them. But I was beside a self-scan machine in a shop and decided to put four or five through just to be sure,” recalled the fortunate Kilkenny resident.
After checking the final ticket, a text came up on the screen informing her to contact the National Lottery. The winner was in shock all weekend after discovering her ticket was worth €35.000, because she wasn’t expecting more than a couple of hundreds.
A National Lottery spokesperson was delighted when this winner came forward, but reminded other players to check their numbers on regular basis so they wouldn’t miss out on a opportunity to collect an enormous fortune.
“It was great to see the joy on the face of our winner who thankfully decided to check old National Lottery tickets. We cannot state how important it is to check your tickets after each draw,” said the lottery spokesperson and reminded residents of Cork they’re still waiting to hear from a Euromillions player who scooped a €1.000.000 windfall on February 23rd.
